6 in 10 have a strong intention to help family and friends struggling with their bills

Australian research conducted in May 2020 by RFI Research on behalf of BPAY group has revealed that 58% of people have a strong intention to help family and friends struggling with bills.

The BPAY research also reinforces HelpPay’s own research which was conducted independently and separately.

HelpPay’s research, also conducted in May 2020, found that over 66% of people would be likely or highly likely to pay a bill if asked to by an immediate family member and 68% were somewhat or very comfortable if asked to help.

HelpPay’s research indicates that not only are people willing to help, but the stigma of asking for help in the first place may not be what people build it up to be.

Managing Director and co-founder of HelpPay, Andrew Ellett, says “people can feel embarrassed about asking for help with bills but they shouldn’t be - especially with immediate family and close friends. Our research indicates when asked people want to provide help”.

“The fact is that when approached the right way, and given the chance to have a conversation to understand the background for why they’re being asked to help, people overwhelmingly want to.”

“Picking up the phone and explaining the situation, and how you’ve tried to avoid needing help can go a very long way to getting the help you need with a few bills.”
