People are 2x more likely to help than you think

Asking for help can be difficult but people are. Dr Heidi Grant is a social psychologist and author of a book titled Reinforcements: How to Get People to Help You  to help people get more comfortable asking for help. Dr Heidi says "the embarrassment of getting turned down is enough to keep most of us suffering in silence." But as Dr Grant explains it doesn't have to be this way and infact by not asking for help we are holding ourselves back because people are, by in large, built to be helpful.

"Are we actually likely to get turned down? Are we right to worry? The answer is surprisingly, no" says Dr Grant, who goes on to say "people are more helpful than we think they'll be, in fact much more. A recent paper reviewing more than 14,000 instances of people asking perfect strangers for help showed that they underestimated their likelihood of getting that help by 48%. In other words, other people are roughly twice as likely to help us as we think they'll be. This is true when requests for help are large or irritating".

This is certainly very reassuring to hear because we all know that asking for help and getting over that fear of showing vulnerability can be challenging, but the good news is that when we do get over that fear and open up that we need help - we are more likely to get a yes than we think we will.
